Mourning and remembrance jewelry was very popular in the 19th century - locks of hair from the person being mourned, or remembered, would be placed in lockets or behind the glass panels of these specially made items. Often the hair would be minutely plaited into an intricate pattern. Later, as photography was developed, a photo might take the place of the hair. C9615

Victorian Mourning Brooch, Black with Pearl. Although this is a mourning brooch, it could be worn every day - it is a plain black enamel oval set centrally with an incised star design housing a single small natural pearl. The backing is gold - no hallmarks - and it has the characteristic Victorian long pin. Brooch measures 3 cm by 2.5 cm (1.3/16 inch by 1 inch). Very good condition . Close-up, under strong light, there are a few age scratches on the enamel, but these are not readily visible to the naked eye. A very pretty and useful brooch, over 100 years old.
Circa: Late 19th Century
Condition: Very Good

7364

Mourning Brooch, Pearls with Hair Panel. Very pretty little 19th century gold mourning brooch - genuine natural pearls surround a glass-fronted locket panel, in which there is a lock of blond hair. Brooch measures 23 mm by 29 mm (just under 1 inch by 1.1/8 inches). The brooch has a few faults - the panel at the rear is missing its cover - this was probably also glass, but could have been gold. There is a rear safety chain, which is missing it’s end pin. This can easily be replaced by a whole new safety chain if desired - it is not original to the brooch. A few machine-made marks on the rear metal. So - a restoration project for someone to fit a rear panel. Such a pretty brooch deserves the repair.
Circa: Late 19th Century
