Mourning and remembrance jewelry was very popular in the 19th century - locks of hair from the person being mourned, or remembered, would be placed in lockets or behind the glass panels of these specially made items. Often the hair would be minutely plaited into an intricate pattern. Later, as photography was developed, a photo might take the place of the hair. Click for more detail...
1754
Victorian 18ct Gold Turquoise Ring. A dainty little 19th century 18ct gold ring, set with a cross of
tiny turquoises. This could have been a remembrance ring, as
the proportions of the cross are not even (as they would be is it
was a lover’s knot or cross) - it is more like a cross has been laid
sideways across the face of the ring. Surrounding the turquoises
are engraved flowers and leaf scrolls. Turquoise is a highly
absorbent stone which turns green with exposure to pollutants
and 20th century innovations such as detergent in washing-up
water. Seven of the turquoises have this colour, four of the
turquoises are true turquoise (and therefore could be
replacements).
It is just a
matter of time before the colours mellow.
Ring has been sized at some time - visible inside only.
Ring fitting is English size L (USA size 5.1/2). Face of ring
measures approx. 12.5mm across (7/16 inch) by 7mm deep (1/
4 inch). Overall very good condition. There is a tiny little recess
at the rear of the ring face - could have been for a lock of hair.
Circa: 1837-1901: Victorian.
Condition: Used, but very good condition

Click for more detail...
3962
Victorian Mourning Brooch or Locket. A very decorative mourning brooch, dating from the late 1800s. Made in pinchbeck, it has a large central amethyst-coloured glass stone, faceted at the edges, and concave in the centre.
There is a small hole in the centre, and this once probably was where a single pearl or even a jet bead would have been secured. This could be replaced easily. The brooch has an unusual hinged front panel, which springs open at the press of a small button to reveal a locket compartment beneath the stone which would have carried a keepsake of the "loved one" - usually hair, or a photo, or something small. This one still has a scrap of a photograph in it , but dating from the 20th century, so not the original. The brooch is in very good condition, except at the rear, a new pin has been fitted, and this is in silver metal, not brass.
Brooch measures 41 mm diameter (1.5/8 inches).
Circa: Late 19th Century - 1880s-1900
Condition: Very Good - see description
Country of Origin: GB
