C9728

Early Victorian Framed Miniature. Miniature portrait of an early Victorian gentleman - he sits with an open book and a statuette on the table or desk in front of him, with an elaborately curtained window at the side. Probably an amateur painting, but has charm and great detail. Painted on ivory. Mounted on a brass frame, with dark stained wood surround. Measures framed: 14 cm square (5.1/2 inches). Round section of painting is 7 cm diameter (2.3/4 inches). Condition is very good - some overpainting in a curve at the very bottom, where paint may have worn off against the frame, and possible overpainting to the forehead where there appears to be a mark painted over. Interesting little painting. Circa 1840.
Circa: Circa 1840
Condition: Very Good - see description

C10289

Handpainted Portrait, Victorian. 19th century hand painted portrait. Really a large portrait miniature. It measures 25 cm by 19.5 cm framed (9.3/4 inches by 7.3/4 inches). Watercolour. Interesting study - whereas the face is very well painted and a very sensitive rendition, the clothing is rather crude in comparison. The gold mount is showing signs of green tarnish, and there are two scratches in the glass in one corner. The frame has a silver gilded beading around the portrait and mount, and all is encased in burgundy morocco leather (which has some wear on the front edges). It has a top-mounted hanging ring, and the rear carries a gold embossed stamp Mr Herbert Watkins, 179 Regent Street. Whether Mr Watkins is the framer, the artist, or the subject I have no idea. Overall very good condition.
Circa: Mid to Late 19th Century
Condition: Very Good
Country of Origin: GB

0347

Watercolour Classic Scene of Women Sewing. This may have been copied from an Old Master - the scene is a sewing circle of women, all intent on their work. The central woman is posed almost as if she was the Virgin Mary - and maybe she is. Very classic in style, with beautiful detail to the faces. This is a very old watercolour, and there are some signs of insect damage to the surface, mainly to the left corners and bottom area - has been in storage for many years. Could be touched up easily. Painting in frame measures 43 cm by 64 cm (17 inches by 25.1/4 inches).
Frame has damage and losses, but this painting would be better in another frame, anyway, with a good matt to enhance it.
Circa: Unknown
Condition: Some faults, see description

8989

19th Century Miniature in Velvet Frame. A 19th century Victorian period oval miniature of a woman - water colour painted on card (I think) - could be oil, as there is a faint crackle glazing to the surface, indicating some form of thin varnish. The painting is mounted under glass in an oval brass surround set in purple velvet. This is then enclosed in a velvet hinged case. Case and mount generally in very good condition - there is a mark on the inside left fabric, and some general minor age wear.
The painting has a few minor foxing spots - one to the nose, one to the left cheek - but is in good condition otherwise. The woman has a black hat or mob cap on her head, with brown hair peeping out from under it. She is wearing black dress - mourning? Whole outer case measures 14.3/4 inches (12cm) x 4 inches (10cm). The painting itself measures with a frame area of all around.
Circa: Late 19th Century
Condition: Used, see description
