The lid is a carved head with a collar. Box measures 15.5 cm high and 5.2 cm diameter (about 6 inches by 2 inches). (Lime boxes were used in mostly South East Asia, as lime is a ingredient in betel nut chewing). Very good condition.

C9678

Victorian Leather Large Writing Box. Beautifully fitted with ivory ruler and two page turners or paper knives, this superior writing box is in very complete and excellent condition. Large size, it measures (closed) 16.5 cm high by 37 cm wide and 27 cm deep (6.1/2 inches by 14.1/2 inches by 10.1/2 inches). It has a carry handle on the lid, engraved with the two initials C entwined. Box opens to reveal three white panels of what could be mica - cold and hard to the touch. On these you could write yourself notes, and clean them off when dealt with. (Two of these have cracks, but still very usable). At the rear of these is a lift-out pen tray with further pen compartment underneath. One side of the pen tray has a square leather cased lift-out inkwell with spring top (some corrosion to the lid interior of the actual bottle). The other side houses an identical case, but this is labelled "Light" and houses a striker for a match with a lid to the match keep underneath. There is a little brass mounted holder, in which you could prop the lit match while you melted your wax for the seal on your letter.
The lower base lid folds open for the writing slope, and underneath the slope are further compartments for letter storage etc.
The top lid has compartments for unused letterheads and envelopes. The back compartment houses a matching folder, probably for blotting paper and half-finished letters. There are three ivory implements housed here - one ruler, with the name of Parkins & Gotto, Oxford Street, London on it. One short page turner, and one large paperknife - probably to slit your newspapers open, as they used to be folded uncut. Beautiful item all round.

Click for more detail...
C3831

Very Large New Zealand Rimu Wooden Urn. A beautiful piece - a large urn/vase made of turned New Zealand rimu wood. Made by Paul Beckett some 15 years ago, this piece is a tour de force of wood turning. It stands 58cm (just under 23 inches) high and is 35cm (13.3/4 inches) wide at its widest point. The inside has also been hollowed out, and as a result, the vase is wonderfully light. Rimu has a rich red grain, and this piece looks right at home sitting on an antique cabinet or pedestal. It has a waxed finish. Many hours of patient work have gone into turning a piece this delicate and large. It is in very good condition - there is a straight crack on the base, but it is a closed one, and has always been there.

2643

Assorted Round Antique Frames. Five round frames: two plain oak one, two moulded stained frames, and one small frame which is possibly mahogany and looks like it may have been off a ceiling rose or large piece of furniture, possibly a table base. This last frame would be Regency or very early Victorian. The oak rounds are early 20th century in style, and measure 17.5 cm diameter and 19.5 cm diameter respectively (7 inches and 7.3/4 inches). They have no fittings, being just plain rounds bevelled on the inner edge. The next two are a pair, although slightly different colours. Recessed at the rear to take glass and picture. They each measure 22 cm diameter (about 9 inches). The last one is about 15 cm diameter (5.3/4 inches). All in very good condition. Might be useful for some one.

C7945

Victorian Small Jewelry Box. Small Victorian or Edwardian jewellery box, dating late 19th or very early 20th century. It is basically wooden, covered with a fine Morocco leather - this leather has cracked and worn on the lid. (It is often better to peel it off, until you have a lovely little wooden box with handle). Inside is a lit out tray for smaller items, including a round in the middle for your fob watch. Tray has gilded edges, and is covered in green velvet. Inside lid and lower part of box are covered in green silk. Inside is in very good condition. No key. Box measures 15.25 cm wide and 11.5 cm deep. It stands about 7.5 cm high (6 inches by 5 inches and 3 inches high). Metal key plate and handle. These boxes were frequently used as travelling cases, hence the exterior damage.
