1719
Folk Art Painted European Coffer, 19th C. Large pine coffer, 19th century, with fairly crudely painted design of stylized flowers in panels on front, and to lid in the style of a marriage chest. Inside it has a candle box to the left side, and iron hinges and lock - the lock is a large complicated affair, and I have no key!
Coffer is in very good used condition - very good interior, and nice naturally distressed paint work outside. I don’t know if the painting is original to it, but it certainly has some age.
Lovely character decorator item and very, very useful.
Coffer measures 59 cm high, 62 cm deep and 139 cm wide (about 23 inches high, by 24.1/2 inches deep and 54.1/2 inches wide).
Circa: 19th Century
Condition: Very Good - see description

Click for more detail...
0274
Victorian Burr Walnut Writing Slope. A large, Victorian period, brass-bound, burr walnut writing box of oblong shape, with fitted interior, and drawer in the base. The interior is fitted with a set of 3 secret drawers, hidden behind a sprung panel. These have little fabric ribbon pull handles. The writing slope is leather-covered, with gold tooling. One original ink bottle, although the cap is a probably ring-in. The edges of the box are bound in bevelled brass, and there is a line of double fine brass stringing inside this on all sides. It has a brass lock and escutcheon plate, and also a brass presentation panel on the lid (unengraved).
Box measures : Width 45cm, depth 27cm, height 21cm (17.1/2 inches by 10.5/8 inches by 8.1/4 inches).
Condition: Basically sound. The top has a crack through the veneer across one corner (see photos of lid).
There is a round veneer repair on one side (old), and various small bubbles etc. The brass stringing has some lengths absent. Inside, the leather to the slope is split along the join of the two sections. There is chipping to the black veneer interior edges and the tag with which one pulls up the slope surface to access the interior of the box, has been reglued. The spring to the hidden drawers is accessed by pulling up the partition next to the inkwell, and works extremely well.
Basically, all wear is commensurate with the age of the box, and with use. It is a handsome item, and burr walnut is a very attractive finish. We have further photos available if you email us.
