4899

Carved Bone Dip Pen. 19th Century carved bone dip pen - the nib is kept protected by reversing it and screwing into the main case. There is something missing, not sure what, but there is a metal screw thread protruding from the lower section, and when assembled for use, the lower section simple fits into the upper section and is quite secure by just turning it - however, it probably once has a bone covering with screw thread on it so that it screwed into the upper section. Open, the item measures 17 cm long - closed it is 13.5 cm long (8.3/4 inches and 5.1/4 inches). It is 1.2 cm diameter at its widest point (1/2 inch). Apart from the missing bit, it is in excellent condition. No nib present, but the nib holder is in very good condition.
Circa: Late 19th to Early 20th Century
Condition: See Description

5513A

Victorian Retractable Propelling Pencil. This pretty little Victorian pencil has either a crystal or a citrine stone set into the finial, engraved with the owner’s initials (can’t quite read them.. D.E something, can’t decipher the last one). The pencil is made in gold - no hallmarks or maker’s names, but it would have to be gold of some type - it is very slim and delicate, and has suffered a few little dings along the barrel over the years. The sliding retraction mechanism still works, although I haven’t been able to get a lead into it, as I think there is the remains of a lead still in there. Pencil measures 82 mm long when retracted, and 92 mm long when out. It is 4 mm diameter on the barrel (3.1/4 inches and 3.5/8 inches length, and 3/16 inch diameter). Circa mid to late 19th century.
Circa: Circa Mid to late 19th Century
Condition: Some small faults, see descript.

3718

Oriental Antimony Inkwell. A small inkwell, probably Japanese, but could be Chinese. It is made in the metal antimony, and decorated with a beautiful pattern of chrysanthemums in high relief. The lid hinges open to reveal a white glass inkwell liner. The liner has a sort of chip on the inner rim (see photo) - it’s not at all sharp, rather rounded in fact, could be old, or in the manufacture, as the glass is moulded , and quite crude. Inkwell measures 6cm x 5cm (2.3/8 inches x 2.1/8 inches). About 3cm high (1.1/4 inches). It is in very good condition although there is an ink stain under the lid (which may well clean off). Probably dates from 1920s-50s. Airmail Post to North America: US$6.75.
Circa: Early 20th century
Condition: Very Good - See description
Country of Origin: JP
