Click here to enlarge image and see more about item C8160: John Leech Engraving, Victorian Period.
Click for more detail...
C8160

John Leech Engraving, Victorian Period. Old engraving , by the famous Victorian caricaturist John Leech. The scene is possibly from Dickens, or Punch magazine. Has all the usual Leech humour - The man stands boasting before the fire, attended by an incredulous young woman, and her mother. Acutely observed details - mother holds a screen to protect her already ruddy complexion from the fire.
Engraving has faults - the edges and one corner are damaged. The area inside the plate at the bottom has some faults, and there is some general grubbiness, which may well rub off. Framed, you could eliminate all the creases and edge damage - it could be matted closer to the actual cartoon, still allowing Leech’s signature (on the plate) to show. As is, it measures 24.5 cm by 15.5 cm (9.2/3 inches by 6.1/4 inches).
This engraving is uncoloured, in its original condition. Over 100 years old.
Circa: Mid to Late 19th Century
Condition: Faults, see description

C4411

Dance of Otaheite, 18th Century Engraving. An engraving of dancers, Tahiti - dressed in dancing dress: fabric fans and swathes, with coconut shells. Shown performing on a checkerboard floor outside a thatched hut with drummers in the background, and a crowd of onlookers. Palm trees and mountains in far background. The engraving is entitled "An Exact Representation of a Dance in Otaheite". The artists are "Webber delin." and "Hawkins scuplt.". At the top of the engraving is is the publisher’s credit: "London: Published by Alex.r. Hogg at the Kings Arms, No.16 Paternoster Row." This would have been from the visit to Otaheite by Captain Wallis.
Mounted loose on protective card. Plate area measures 34.5cm wide by 22cm high. (13.1/2 inches wide x 8.3/4 inches high). In very good condition.
Circa: 18th Century

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 7431: Antique Coloured Engraving. Miriam.
Click for more detail...
7431

Antique Coloured Engraving. Miriam. Little engraving or maybe a print entitled "Miriam" - the bottom small print reads "Singleton Sculp" on the right side, and "J.Dean P...." (indistinct) on the left. Engraving measures 16 cm by 13 cm (6.1/4 inches by 5.1/8 inches).
The border and area of the printed box are somewhat grubby - this item has probably been mounted under a matt before, and this is the result of removing the matt. However, the actual picture area inside the printed box is not damaged, and although you would loose the title (unless you had one of those cut-out matts which reveal the title) it would frame up very well. The actual picture area is 11 cm by 8.5 cm (4.3/8 inches by 3.3/8 inches).
This is a really appealing engraving, Miriam has a lovely face - it would date from early to mid 19th century.
Circa: Early to Mid 20th Century

Signed Ltd Edition Denis Brown Print. Print from New Zealand artist Denis Brown - beach scene with dinghy, Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Signed on the plate and also by hand on the print, along with the edition number. This one is number 612 of an edition of 700. Dated 1980.
Print measures 38 cm by 44.5 cm (15 inches by 17.1/2 inches). There is some staining to the bottom left corner, and some slight yellowing along the edges. However, these can all be hidden by a matt, without affecting the plate area. There are a few marks top left corner - probably would clean off.

Late Victorian Two vintage etchings, probably circa late 19th century, titled "On the Thames near Cookham", showing the river with a punt and small sailing boat at a bend with rustic houses in background, and "St. Michael's Mount, Cornwall", which is an interesting scene with storm waves and sailing boats in the bay under the Mount. 0353

John Leech Engraving, Hand Coloured, 19C. A 19th century hand-coloured engraving by John Leech entitled " The Two Strings". It depicts a young woman entertaining two young men, the "two strings" to her bow in the marriage stakes . Neither are at all perfect - one is very plump and the other is saturnine with long side whiskers- but she wears an expression of smugness. She knows that she will get a proposal out of at least one of them, and thus be that most economically necessary and respectable of things in the Victorian era - a married woman. In very good condition, with a few spots of foxing in the top centre of the picture. Modern frame and mount: frame is gilded and has figured wood effect band. Mount is pale pink with two rows of gold coloured bands. Measurements: 15 inches (38cm) wide and 12.1/4 inches high (31cm)
Circa: 19th Century
