Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 9959: Figurine, 18th Century English?, Candleholder.

Click for more detail...

9959

Figurine, 18th Century English?, Candleholder. Early figurine of a youth in court clothes - he holds a flower in one hand, and drapes his other arm around foliage holding a large candle sconce. The background is foliage with flowers in the bocage style. Measures 17.5 cm high (about 7 inches). There is considerable chipping to the foliage, and his neck and left hand appears to have been restored. (Room for improvement here). The candle holder needs to be set properly in it's space, as it is only a piece of metal (at the bottom of the sconce) fitting loosely into the holder on the foliage, and is rather insecure. On the plus side, he has a delightful little dog at his side, and is possibly early English porcelain in the Derby manner. Interesting piece.
Circa: Possibly 18th century
Condition: Damaged, see description
Country of Origin: GB
Manufacturer: Derby?

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 10058: Early Staffordshire Sheep Bocage Flatback.

Click for more detail...

10058

Early Staffordshire Sheep Bocage Flatback. English Staffordshire sheep, handpainted, leafy bocage background, flatback chimney mantle ornament. This is an early flatback (so called because the backs were made flat to fit onto a narrow mantlepiece) - it is pearlware, and carries the bocage background of a Georgian piece, with all the leaves being separate pieces of clay, attached together. In the style and possibly by Salt. It measures 11.6 cm high, about 10.8 cm wide and 5 cm deep (4.1/2 inches by 4.1/4 inches by 2 inches). As is so often the case, it has damage. There are two stalks of the bocage background missing behind and to the side of the sheep's head, and several leaves glued back on and repainted. The sheep's nose also has a restoration. There is a chip underneath the figurine at the front, partly showing on the exterior underneath the rear leg of the sheep, and having a small hairline about10cm or 3/8 inch from this towards the hoof. Small rim chip to one side, and two scuffs to the glaze on the blue ribbon. All this would be very restorable, as pearlware is easy to work with, but it's all part of the age and charm really. Circa early 1800's.
Circa: 18th or early 19th century
Condition: some faults, see description
Country of Origin: GB
Manufacturer: Unknown, Staffordshire.
