C10000

Antique Indonesian Wayang Pierced Buffalo Hide Puppet. Beautifully detailed large antique wayang shadow puppet, made out of pierced buffalo hide, supported by turned horn sticks and rods. Balinese or Indonesian. You can animate the hands and arms etc., using the sticks. The hands are very graceful and expressive, the body is gold-painted and has cutwork decoration and beautiful intricate painting. The hair is curly, and this effect is achieved by delicate cut work. Puppet is one dimensional, and measures 45.5 cm high, not including the hand poles, so about 65 cm all up (25.1/2 inches). There is one hand animator pole missing, and a break in the central support rod behind the body. To use as a puppet, these would need repair, but to use as decoration, it’s superb.

Click for more detail...

C15742-1

Pair of Tribal Carved Wood Figurines. Tribal art, pair of unusual carved figurines, male and female. Not sure where these came from - Solomon Islands, or maybe even Africa. Carved from a two-tone wood, they have inset eyes, which could be seeds. He wears a little modesty cloth and she appears to wear a loose shift dress - although these items are represented by just a few strokes, as they are very economically carved. Possibly carved from rounds of wood, since they are very straight up and down. She has a top-knot hair style. Both have necklaces - could have been added later, especially the woman figure. His necklace is blue and white glass beads, and hers is shell and either tortoiseshell or horn. This necklace also has a screw-barrel clasp, such as was common in the early 20th century. Condition is very good - except that the female figurine has the front of her feet chipped off, and one eye has a chip. They each measure 21 to 21.5 cm high and are around 3.2 to 3.5 cm diameter. Possibly they are either an indigenous version of dolls or tourist souvenirs from the early part of the 20th century. (Selling on Consignment)

Pair of African Cast Bronze Figures. Cold painted bronze figurines - tribal Africans, elongated bodies sitting on three-legged stools. African, with the paint to the hair to show the curl details, and to tribal decoration on the knees. They each measure 36 cm high.
