Click for more detail...

M421

Sterling Silver Powder Compact, 1948. Square compact, engine-turned engraving to case, and a crown applied to the lid. British hallmarks for E.S & Co, which is E. Silver & Co, of 81 New Bond St., London. (Silverware manufactured by Mark Tyzack & Sons). The date mark is Birmingham, 1948. There is an inscription inside "To Paul from Bernard, 1st November 1952". Paul is short for Pauline, and it was a birthday present. The compact still has the original gauze filter and the lid contains a mirror. Item measures approx. 7 cm square, and 0.9 cm thick. Total weight (this includes the mirror) is 84.9g. Condition: there are a few depression marks, all shallow (where the case has been snapped shut with the fingers), and the mirror has been glued in at some stage, rather messily. This could be dissolved or gently scraped away. Overall it is a good-looking compact, and nicely made.1

Click for more detail...

12742

Manicure Stand, Guilloche Enamel and Silver Plate. Bright aqua coloured enamel work to four of the items on this early 1900s manicure stand. It even has a little compact - presumably for rouge - at the top. Implements are a nail buffer, a cuticle trimmer, a nail file, the mirror-lidded compact and (a ring-in here) a button hook.
Stand measures 16 cm high and about 8 cm diameter with the tools on it. The silver plate has wear, and the plaster of Paris which weights the stand base is broken up but still doing the job. It needs a new piece of felt or card applied over the plaster, a simple job. Very attractive with definite Art Nouveau traces.
Circa: Circa 1900

Click for more detail...

C14654

Chatelaine, Four Pieces plus Belt Hook, American Silver Unusual late 1800s chatelaine, sterling silver with four components, all of which have the matching engraved pattern of acanthus scrolls, and blank initials panels. There is a large locket, on which the front slides away to reveal a mirror; next is a short tubes with a flip-lid catch and a slide slit on one side and an inner cap which was probably for a lipstick. Next is a little purse, which opens to reveal a gilded interior with a clip on either side to hold items (presumably stamps) in place. Last item is a bit of a mystery - long tube, with a domed end which can be pressed in. Tube opens further up, but nothing to indicate the purpose of the top. Tube is 8.1 cm long and just under 1 cm diameter. the lipstick tube is 3.3 cm long and 1.2 cm diameter. Locket is 4.1 cm diameter, and the purse measures 3 cm by 3.4 cm. Sterling stamp plus maker's mark F & B on all items except the belt hook, which has a mark of W.Co on an arrow, with the Sterling mark. The F & B mark is either for Foster & Bailey of Providence, RI, USA, circa 1878 - 1898, or their successor Theodore W. Foster & Brothers. The W. Co mark is Webster Company - North Attleboro, MA, USA founded in 1869 by George K. Webster. All in very good condition. There is a very minor dent on the locket, and there is a little bit of spare chain from the belt hook. Total length is 20 cm. TW: 55 g.
