Click here to enlarge image and see more about item C13084: Milk Glass Cleopatra's Needle, Greener & Co.

Click for more detail...

C13084

Milk Glass Cleopatra's Needle, Greener & Co. Cleopatra's Needle (the London monument), made in milk glass by Greener & Co. This souvenir of Cleopatra's Needle was made in 1877, the date when the obelisk was to arrive in London from Egypt to be erected on the Embankment. (The ship carrying the obelisk sank in the Thames, and so it was not erected until September 1878). This item was made as a souvenir for general sale, so is a little crudely made. The glass is showing signs of stress where the chamfered point of the obilisk occurs - where the glass meets, it is not perfect alignment, and feels rough, as if a small chip is here. If you examine this area under magnification you can see the construction. Strangely, it looked perfect until dust showed the glass seams. Measures 22 cm high, with a base of 8.75 cm diameter (8.3/4 inches by 3.1/2 inches). Quite a rare item.
Circa: 1877
Condition: See description
Country of Origin: GB
Manufacturer: Greener & Co
