C16524

Pretty Victorian Jug with Pewter Lid, Faults. Decorative antique jug, English made, late 1800s. Imari colours of very dark cobalt blue with iron red and pink. Gilded patterns to the top and bottom bands, and also to the handle. Pewter flip lid, with a little ceramic button which when pulled back with your thumb, flips open the lid. (Stamped "Clarke's Patent". Jug handle has been repaired - old work, but decoratively OK. However, you shouldn't put the handle in warm or hot water, as this can melt the old glue, and the handle would come off. There is also a faint tight hairline under the base. As a decoration it is lovely. Measures about 17 cm high, and12.5 cm wide handle to spout at the top. Base rim is 10 cm diameter.
Circa: Late 1800s

Click for more detail...

C16534

Set of Four White Salt Glazed Victorian Jugs. Scenes of angels and children on these beautiful salt-glazed stoneware pitchers. Made by James Dudson, in Hanley in the Staffordshire Potteries in the mid to late 1800s. Possibly the angels depicted are the children's guardian angel - one one side of the jug the angel carries two sleeping children, and on the other she holds one child who carries a burning torch. Garlands of berries and leaves around the cartouches and banding the rims. Graduated sizes, with the largest jug measures 23 cm high (9 inches), the next one measuring 20 cm high (8 inches), the next is 19 cm high (7.1/2 inches) and the smallest is16.5 cm high (6.1/2 inches). All in excellent condition - a few kiln transference marks on the largest (see image) and the odd kiln shrinkage marks. A very pretty set and unusual to get the whole four in such good condition - or to get four matching at all. The second tallest jug is stamped with the impressed marks "Dudson" and "England" - the England mark in a curved stamp. The two smaller jugs have just the curved England mark, and the largest has no mark - it is not unusual for only one item in a set to be fully marked.
Circa: Mid to late 1800s

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item C15710: Pair of Georgian Period Sauce Tureens, Ridgway.

Click for more detail...

C15710

Pair of Georgian Period Sauce Tureens, Ridgway. Matching Ridgway tureens, circa 1815 to 1830. Beautiful bone china porcelain sauce tureens with attached standplates, pale blue and gold decoration with grape and vine handles and ornate leaf and fruit lid finials. These are an early pair, unmarked, in pattern No. 593, from the prestigious potters J. & W. Ridgway, brothers, who operated together from 1814 to 1830. The shape is illustrated in Godden's "Ridgway Porcelains" in illustration No. 23, and is often attributed to Rockingham. The pattern numbers are marked underneath each tureen. Godden notes that the Ridgway porcelain produced by the brothers during this period was of a very fine and excellent quality. Each tureen measures approx. 16 cm high, 20 cm long and 13.25 cm deep. There are small faults, one tureen has two hairlines on the lid (see images) and some small tight, very short hairlines on the tureen edge. These last are purely old stress lines, and are quite solid and tight and not immediately noticeable. There is is a very minor tiny nick underneath one handle - cannot be seen unless you turn the item upside down, and of no consequence. Mentioned for accuracy. There is a little wear here and there to the gilding, but at this age, this is to be expected. These are the nicest sauce tureens I have seen, and are beautiful display items.
