C16017

Carved Tribal African Figurine. Vintage carving of a man wearing a draped robe and holding a forked stick. African - but no idea where from. Well-carved, with a very attractive expression. Figure has large ears, receding hairline and tight curls to head. His robe is a paler colour than the body, and has a stained-wood plaid pattern. His (removable) stick doesn’t quite reach the hole it should go into on the base. There is another hole carved through his left hand, where probably there was once another stick or maybe a spear. He stands 42 cm high and is about 10 cm wide. Possibly ebony. Very good condition.
Circa: early to mid 20th century?
Condition: Used
Manufacturer: Unknown, African.

C15143

East African Tree of Life Carving. Carving depicting three figures plus a snake - one figure stands on the back of another while a third, crocodile/reptile looking figure also stands in a curve above the base figure. Top figure holds a pot out of which a snake is emerging, biting the back of the reptile man. Two tone wood. There is a glued crack in the back of the reptile where the snake adjoins it and a fairly tight split in the snake were it is curved. Could be glued, but not effecting the security of the carving. Item measures 51 cm high by 16 cm by about 16 cm. Weird and wonderful tree of life.
Circa: Unknown 20th century

C14885

Miniature Book, Lady of the Lake. Quaint little book, containing the poem :The Lady of the Lake" by Sir Walter Scott in 506 pages. It has a little engraving of Ellen’s Lake, Loch Katrine, and a few other illustrations. Published in Glasgow, Scotland by David Bryce & Son - now published by Hendersons, Edinburgh Ltd. The interior of the book is in good condition, but the cover and spine are faulty. I think it was once covered in tartan fabric, but this is now down to the remaining diagonal threads. Could easily be recovered in fabric again. Item measures 5.5 cm high by 3.5 cm wide and 1.4 cm thick.
Circa: early to mid 20th century

E11433

Leather-Bound Histoire de la Réfugiés Protestants. Beautifully bound book, prize for 1st Class French at the Whitchurch Free Grammar School in 1858, awarded to James Bromfield. Front cover bears the gold-stamped crest of the school, founded AD 1550. "Histoire de la Réfugiés Protestants de France". Volumes I and II bound together. By M. Ch. Weiss. 455 pages in all. Paris edition, Charpentier, Libraire-Éditeur. Published 1853. Internally it has some yellow staining to pages in the earlier section - mildew or similar? I don't think this book was ever read by Master Bromfield - it's in very crisp condition inside. The cover has slight knocks to edges of spine and corners. Book measures 8.25 cm by 12 cm and 4.7 cm thick.

E10579

Set of Four French Copper Vintage Saucepans. Graduated set, copper with tinned interiors for safe cooking, and cast iron handles. True cook's pans, heavy quality. Smallest is marked faintly "S. 3 8". It measures 10 cm high and 15 cm diameter. It is a bit out of round at the top - could be straightened, but it still holds the same amount. Second size up is stamped 18 on the side. It is 9.5 cm high and 18.5 cm diameter. Second to largest is 10 cm high and 20.5 cm diameter, and the largest is stamped 25, and measures 11.5 cm high and 23 cm diameter. It has a few rough patches to the top rim. Apart from the minor blemishes mentioned, they are all in good, sound condition. Tinned interiors always look a bit dirty when they are no longer brand-new, but they all just need a good wash, a bit of olive oil to the interior surfaces, and they're good to cook. Total weight: 6.135 kg.

E11457

Vintage Nutmeg Grater. Grater from early 1900s. Grate the whole nutmeg kernel on the front curved surface (the grated bits fall out from the inside), and keep the remaining piece of nutmeg in the little compartment at the rear. Can be hung on a wall. It has a sort of overall surface rust, but has been tinned (a sort of oxidised seal, also used in copper saucepans) originally, so this should come off with a scrub. Made of pressed tin. Quaint and useful for a kitchenalia collector. Measures 16 cm long by 6.5 cm wide and 3.6 cm deep. Rear compartment has sliding door which you slide by grasping the sides of the grater.
Circa: Early 1900s

7940

Large Square Glass Inkwell. Bevelled glass inkwell, measuring 54 mm high and 69 mm square (2.1/8 inches and about 2.3/4 inches square). It would date from very early 20th century, and has wear on the underneath to support this age. There is a shallow chip on one side. Still a nice piece of glass, and a useful paperweight, since the well is deep enough to accommodate pins or paperclips. Comes with a little pewter liner - but I don’t think this is original to it, as it is much less deep than the actual glass well.
Circa: Early 20th Century
Condition: 1 small chip, see description

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 9960: Blue and White Faience Inkwell, Handpainted.

Click for more detail...

9960

Blue and White Faience Inkwell, Handpainted. Interesting European continental antique faience inkwell - white glaze over slightly pinkish white earthenware body. Hand painted in blue designs. Looks a lot like Delft, but I'm not certain. The only maker's mark is a hand painted "R" underneath (just like the French Robert's faience factory in Marseilles, but I don't think this item is that early - but I could be wrong). Part of the decoration on the lid of the inkwell itself is cross and dots, a little like the Weesp mark. Measurements: 11.5 cm diameter and 8.2 cm high (4.1/2 inches by about 3.1/4 inches). The finial to the lid has been off and some time, and is glued on. There is a scrape to the point of the finial, resulting in lack of glaze there. The inside of the ink pot has had the glaze worn off in two areas, one on either side of the bottom - probably where a sharp dip pen was often rested. The loss of glaze here has resulted in an ink-blue mark. There are three round holes in the top of the stand for holding your pen. Lovely piece, is a good weight, definitely not modern. Inside the carcass, the thick white glaze has not touched all areas giving a good insight into the way the item was made.
Circa: Unknown early 20th century?
Condition: See description
Manufacturer: unknown, see description
